According to a foreign news agency, hackers accessed the Bank of Uganda’s IT systems and transferred the money.

The Ugandan government newspaper reported, citing unidentified sources, that a hacking group based in Southeast Asia sent part of the stolen money to Japan, but the bank has managed to recover half of the stolen money.

Further investigations into the cyber attack are underway on the orders of the Ugandan president.

Banks and other financial service providers, including telecom firms, have been hit by cyberattacks several times in Uganda, but police officials have said that some banks are reluctant to publicly acknowledge such incidents.
